Gladstone's annual Moonlight Madness happens next Friday, Nov. 13, and residents across the Central Plains region are encouraged to attend the event and check out what's hip in Happy Rock.
Gladstone Chamber of Commerce president Nick Beavington says the event not only encourages folks to shop locally, but also acts as a springboard into the holiday season.
"At 7 o'clock, we will light the Christmas tree at the cenotaph," said Beavington. "We invite everyone out to join us for hot chocolate and treats."
Beavington notes, the project is run in conjunction with the Austin Credit Union's interest-free loan program that will be taking place throughout the holiday season. He says the Credit Union is offering members loans of up to $2,000 interest-free adding it's part of a valuable partnership that has been ongoing for a number of successful years.
"It's been a fantastic partnership because it helps get money spent in the community, adding to the town's economic growth," said Beavington.
Beavington says the evening is one of several annual events put on by the chamber, including the Santa Claus Parade, which will take place on Dec. 5.
"The parade will take place on the main avenues in Gladstone," said Beavington. "People can show up around 10 a.m. and expect the parade to start shortly after."
A special lunch with Santa will take place after the parade at the Gladstone Legion club room, and children will have the opportunity to have photos taken with the big man in red.
Mayor Eileen Clarke says the annual kickoff to the holiday shopping season comes at a hectic time for the town's administrative staff. She adds most employees will be busy making the move and settling into their new quarters.
"That week our town's municipal office is moving to the Credit Union building beside Clarke's Gift Shoppe," said Clarke.
Clarke points out this year's event is earlier than previous years, and is also on the same weekend as the Gladstone Veterans Banquet.
"It's a week earlier than it normally would have been," said Clarke. "The Chamber rescheduled because of conflicts with the business people."
Most importantly, Clarke feels the celebration will be a time for fellowship.
"It's a good kickoff to the Christmas season," said Clarke. "A great chance to meet other people in the community (and) encourage folks to shop locally."
