This week, Jessica Toews of the MacGregor Mustangs girls volleyball team is the Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week. Toews is the captain of the team and is in Grade 12 at MacGregor Collegiate. She also competes in track and field, basketball and badminton.

The Mustangs are gearing up for the playoffs and will play in an exhibition tournament at Portage Collegiate Institute next weekend.

In other news, Central Plains major midget AAA Capitals netminder Bryan Tait was named DEKALB defensive player of the week in the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League. The previous week, Tait was between the pipes for the Caps as they defeated the Eastman Selects 5-1. He also held his team in it on Halloween night at Centennial Arena in Portage la Prairie taking a 4-2 decision over the visiting Pembina Valley Hawks. He also stood on his head Nov. 1 as the Capitals dropped a 2-1 shootout match to the Winnipeg Wild on the road.

Portage Terriers netminder Jason Kasdorf was runner up for the GDI Prairies Goaltender Award for the month of October with his stellar play. Kasdorf backstopped the Terriers to two big wins over the Selkirk Steelers in a home-and-home last weekend.
