Manitoba RHAs look to U.K. to fill shortage

Manitoba may be a good place to work, but how far is it from Toronto?
That seems to be the question Manitoba's health-profession recruiters heard during a trip to the United Kingdom.
The Regional Health Authority — Central Manitoba Inc. recently put its feelers out to determine whether doctors and nurses from the United Kingdom have any interest in coming to Manitoba.
Dr. Denis Fortier, vice-president of medical services with the Central RHA, who is also chairman of a group representing vice-presidents of medical services in all of Manitoba, joined Gary McIntosh, liaison with the Physician Resource Co-ordination Office of Manitoba Health and Health Living, for an information gathering trip to England, Ireland and Scotland from Oct. 5-18 to see if there was any potential to recruit health professionals from the U.K.
"It was a fact-finding mission to find out if there was interest in the U.K. to work in Manitoba, for physicians and nurses, and other health-care related people," said Fortier.
The delegation participated in health trade shows in Dublin, Ireland, Glasgow, Scotland, and Manchester and London in England.
In Central RHA, currently there are 24 openings for nurses, and six for physicians, among the vacancies.
