Trojans better in Neepawa after dismal home opener

The Portage Collegiate Institute Trojans boys' hockey team is still looking for that first victory of the season after going winless in tournament play this weekend.

However, Trojans' coach Mark Essay said he saw plenty of positives during the Neepawa Tigers Halloween Tournament despite his club's 0-3 record.

"We were just really happy it wasn't a continuation from Wednesday," said Essay, referring to PCI's 8-0 loss to the Morris Mavericks last week. "We were so broken down after the game Wednesday and had no practice time in between. The boys seemed to have let it go, and came to play."

One bright spot was the Trojans' first game against the Minnedosa Chancellors that ended in heart-breaking fashion.

The Trojans trailed 1-0 for the majority of the game before Chad Miller tied things up in the third, but Minnedosa jumped in front 2-1 with just 13 seconds left in regulation to put Portage on the consolation side of the bracket.

"It's always frustrating to lose, but when you look back, the Minnedosa team we lost to in the first round went on to beat Neepawa, who smoked us (in the preseason), and we easily could have gone into overtime with them," said Essay. "We battled really well ... and the guys stayed positive on the bench, which was definitely our goal after Wednesday."
