The Portage Collegiate Institute Saints girls' hockey team will have to start showing up for third periods if it wants to pick up a league victory anytime soon.

The Saints gave up an early goal in the final frame for a third-straight outing, and lost 5-2 to the visiting Kelvin Clippers at Centennial Arena.

"We keep stressing to the girls that they have to play a full game," said Saints' coach Jo-Anne Clark-Gillespie. "We come out in the third period, and that's three games in a row where they get an early goal and it just deflates us.

"The first two games we lost, we weren't too overly disappointed with our effort, but tonight was not good."

The loss left the Saints winless in Winnipeg Women's High School Hockey League play at 0-3.

"We don't have time to sink down and take a break. We have to play hard every shift," said Saints' forward Deann DeGraeve, who scored her second of the season Monday. "Once we give up that (late third-period) goal, it's tough to get back into it."

Kelvin's Ainsley Johnston-Weiss beat Saints' netminder Shalynn Perry to open the scoring just over a minute in, but DeGraeve put the two teams back on even terms before the first period was out.
